About Book
Text Book of Pharmacology-II is a comprehensive academic resource that delves into the intricate pharmacological mechanisms and therapeutic applications of drugs acting on various physiological systems. The book begins with a detailed exploration of the cardiovascular system, where Part I introduces the electrophysiology of the heart and covers drugs used in congestive heart failure and hypertension. Part II extends this understanding by addressing anti-anginal, anti-arrhythmic, and anti-hyperlipidemic drugs, along with agents used in shock therapy and hematinics. Part III elaborates on agents affecting blood coagulation, including coagulants, anticoagulants, fibrinolytics, antiplatelet drugs, and plasma volume expanders.
The fourth chapter transitions into the urinary system, focusing on diuretics and antidiuretics, essential in managing fluid balance and blood pressure. The subsequent chapters discuss autocoids, beginning with Part I, which provides an introduction and classification, then explains the roles of mediators like histamine, serotonin (5-HT), prostaglandins, thromboxanes, leukotrienes, angiotensin, bradykinin, and substance P. Autocoids Part II deals with therapeutic agents such as NSAIDs, anti-gout, and antirheumatic drugs, vital in managing inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.
Further, the book dedicates two in-depth chapters to the endocrine system. Part I explores fundamental concepts in endocrine pharmacology and discusses hormones from the anterior pituitary, thyroid, and those regulating calcium and glucose metabolism, including insulin and corticosteroids. Part II focuses on sex hormones like androgens, estrogens, progesterone, and includes critical information on oral contraceptives and uterine-active drugs.
