About Book
The Text Book of Pharmacology-II offers an in-depth exploration of drugs that influence major physiological systems, with a particular focus on cardiovascular, urinary, endocrine, and autacoid-related functions. Designed for advanced students and professionals in the field of pharmacology, the book systematically covers both fundamental concepts and the therapeutic application of drugs. The initial chapters delve into the electrophysiology of the heart and the pharmacological management of cardiovascular disorders, including heart failure, hypertension, angina, arrhythmias, hyperlipidemia, and shock. It also examines hematinics, anticoagulants, coagulants, fibrinolytics, anti-platelet agents, and plasma volume expanders, highlighting their clinical importance.
The section on urinary pharmacology addresses the mechanisms and therapeutic use of diuretics and anti-diuretics. A significant portion of the book is devoted to autacoids, offering a comprehensive review of histamine, serotonin, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and related compounds, along with their antagonists. This is followed by a focused discussion on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-gout, and antirheumatic agents. The endocrine pharmacology chapters provide insights into hormone regulation and treatment, detailing the pharmacodynamics of anterior pituitary hormones, thyroid drugs, calcium-regulating hormones, insulin, oral hypoglycemics, corticosteroids, sex hormones, contraceptives, and uterine-active drugs.
The final chapter on bioassays enriches the reader's understanding of drug standardization and potency testing. It outlines principles, types, and specific examples of bioassays for important agents like insulin, oxytocin, vasopressin, ACTH, and more. Throughout the book, pharmacological concepts are tied closely to clinical relevance, making it a valuable resource for academic study and professional practice. Structured with clarity and detail, this textbook equips readers with the knowledge to understand drug mechanisms and apply them in therapeutic contexts, fostering a deeper grasp of pharmacological science.
