About Book

The Textbook of Pharmacology-I offers a comprehensive foundation for students and professionals seeking to understand the principles and applications of pharmacology. Beginning with a detailed introduction to pharmacology, it defines the subject, traces its historical evolution, and discusses the various sources and nature of drugs, emphasizing essential drug concepts and administration routes. The book thoroughly explores important pharmacological terms such as agonists, antagonists (both competitive and noncompetitive), spare receptors, addiction, tolerance, dependence, and phenomena like tachyphylaxis, idiosyncrasy, and drug allergies. It delves into pharmacokinetics, covering membrane transport and the ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) processes, along with enzyme induction, inhibition, and elimination kinetics. The pharmacodynamics section explains drug action mechanisms, receptor theories, signal transduction, and receptor types like GPCRs, ion channels, and enzyme-linked receptors. Important concepts like dose-response relationships, therapeutic index, and drug interactions—both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic—are clearly presented. The textbook addresses adverse drug reactions and their clinical significance, while also guiding readers through the drug discovery and evaluation process, including preclinical testing, clinical trial phases, and pharmacovigilance. The structure and function of the peripheral nervous system, especially the autonomic nervous system (ANS), are described with emphasis on neurotransmitters and neurohumoral transmission. The book provides in-depth coverage of parasympathomimetics, parasympatholytics, sympathomimetics, sympatholytics, neuromuscular blockers, and skeletal muscle relaxants. It also examines local anesthetics, and drugs used in myasthenia gravis and glaucoma. A significant portion is devoted to the central nervous system, explaining key neurotransmitters such as GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, and the pharmacology of general anesthetics, sedatives, hypnotics, antiepileptics, alcohols, and psychopharmacological agents including antipsychotics and antidepressants. There is detailed insight into drugs for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, CNS stimulants, nootropics, and opioid analgesics. Lastly, the book discusses critical social and clinical issues related to drug addiction, abuse, tolerance, and dependence, making it a holistic resource for anyone pursuing pharmacological sciences.
