About Book

Textbook of Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry–III is a comprehensive academic resource designed to provide in-depth knowledge of advanced concepts in organic chemistry with a strong pharmaceutical orientation. The book begins with a detailed exploration of stereoisomerism, particularly optical isomerism, explaining fundamental concepts such as optical activity, enantiomerism, diastereoisomers, and meso compounds. It highlights the importance of symmetry elements and introduces both DL and RS systems of nomenclature for chiral molecules. The text further discusses racemic mixtures, their modification, and methods of resolution, along with principles of asymmetric synthesis. Geometrical isomerism is thoroughly covered with nomenclature systems like cis-trans and E-Z, along with methods for determining configurations. The book also elaborates on conformational isomerism in ethane, n-butane, and cyclohexane, providing a clear understanding of molecular stability and structure. Advanced topics such as atropisomerism, stereospecific, and stereoselective reactions are also included to enhance conceptual clarity. A significant portion of the book is devoted to heterocyclic compounds, starting with pyrrole, furan, and thiophene, covering their synthesis, reactivity, and medicinal applications. It further extends to important heterocycles like pyrazole, imidazole, oxazole, thiazole, pyridine, quinoline, acridine, and indole, emphasizing their pharmaceutical importance. The book also explains the basicity of pyridine and includes detailed discussions on biologically significant compounds such as pyrimidines, purines, and azepines. Additionally, it covers a wide range of organic reactions of synthetic importance, including various reduction, oxidation, and rearrangement reactions. Key reactions such as Clemmensen, Birch, Wolff–Kishner reduction, Oppenauer oxidation, Beckmann rearrangement, and Claisen–Schmidt condensation are explained with relevance to pharmaceutical synthesis. Overall, this textbook serves as an essential guide for pharmacy students, helping them build a strong foundation in organic chemistry concepts and their applications in drug development and medicinal chemistry.
