About Book

The Text Book of Pharmaceutical Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry provides a comprehensive foundation in the fundamental principles of pharmaceutical analysis and inorganic pharmaceutical chemistry. It is designed to help pharmacy students understand analytical techniques used for the identification, estimation, and quality control of pharmaceutical substances. The book begins with an introduction to pharmaceutical analysis, including different analytical techniques and methods of expressing solution strength. It explains primary and secondary standards with suitable pharmaceutical examples. Important concepts related to analytical errors, accuracy, precision, and significant figures are discussed systematically. The book also provides detailed knowledge about impurities and their regulatory significance in pharmaceutical substances. Various sources and types of impurities encountered during pharmaceutical manufacturing and storage are described. Special emphasis is given to limit tests for chloride, sulphate, iron, arsenic, lead, and heavy metals. Fundamental concepts of acids, bases, buffers, and the pharmaceutical significance of pH are presented clearly. Buffer equations, pH calculations, isotonicity, and their applications in intravenous and ophthalmic preparations are also included. The physiological importance of major extracellular and intracellular electrolytes is explained in detail. Important pharmaceutical electrolytes such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and oral rehydration salts are discussed. The book covers the principles and applications of acid-base titrations along with indicator theories and neutralization curves. Preparation and standardization of important titrants are explained with suitable analytical applications. Non-aqueous titrations are presented to help students understand the estimation of weakly acidic and basic pharmaceutical substances. Precipitation titrations, including Mohr’s, Volhard’s, modified Volhard’s, and Fajans methods, are described systematically. The principles and pharmaceutical applications of gravimetric analysis are also incorporated. Complexometric titrations using EDTA, metal ion indicators, masking, and demasking techniques are explained in an easy-to-understand manner. Redox titrations such as permanganometry, cerimetry, iodimetry, iodometry, and potassium iodate titrations are discussed with their analytical significance. The book provides comprehensive information on gastrointestinal agents, including acidifiers, antacids, laxatives, and related pharmaceutical compounds. Important antimicrobial inorganic agents and their mechanisms, properties, preparation, storage, and applications are also covered. A dedicated section introduces radioactivity and the pharmaceutical applications of important radioisotopes. Safe handling, storage, disposal, and regulatory considerations associated with radiopharmaceuticals are appropriately emphasized. The book further discusses important miscellaneous pharmaceutical compounds such as expectorants, emetics, haematinics, antidotes, and astringents. Chemical structures, molecular weights, physicochemical properties, preparations, uses, storage conditions, and marketed formulations of selected compounds are presented wherever applicable. Overall, this textbook serves as a valuable academic resource for developing strong theoretical and practical knowledge of pharmaceutical inorganic chemistry, quantitative analysis, quality control, and the safe use of inorganic pharmaceutical substances.
