About Book
Text Book of Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms-I provides a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the fundamental principles involved in the design, formulation, preparation, evaluation, and packaging of pharmaceutical dosage forms. The book begins with an introduction to pharmaceutical dosage forms, their classification, selection, routes of drug administration, and the importance of appropriate dosage-form design. It provides detailed knowledge of preformulation studies, including organoleptic properties, solubility, pKa, partition coefficient, dissolution, polymorphism, particle size, surface area, hygroscopicity, density, and powder flow properties. Drug–excipient compatibility and the basic concepts of pharmaceutical stability are also discussed to establish a strong foundation for formulation development. The book explains pharmaceutical excipients, their classification, selection criteria, functions, and applications in different formulations. Important categories such as diluents, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, glidants, anti-adherents, sweeteners, flavours, colours, and preservatives are described in a simple and structured manner. Modern concepts involving novel and co-processed excipients are included along with their regulatory considerations. A dedicated section covers pharmaceutical powders and granules, including their classification, advantages, disadvantages, formulation, preparation, evaluation, packaging, and storage. Various granulation techniques such as wet granulation, dry granulation, and melt granulation are explained with emphasis on their pharmaceutical applications. The book further provides extensive coverage of tablets, one of the most widely used solid dosage forms. Tablet formulation and manufacturing by wet granulation, dry granulation, and direct compression are systematically presented. Tablet compression equipment, common manufacturing defects, their causes, and suitable remedies are also discussed. Different coating techniques, including sugar coating, film coating, and enteric coating, are introduced with their pharmaceutical significance. Evaluation parameters and quality-control requirements of tablets are presented to help readers understand product quality and performance. The capsule section introduces hard and soft gelatin capsules, capsule-shell composition, filling techniques, and manufacturing processes. Evaluation, quality-control testing, packaging, and storage requirements of capsules are also described. The book additionally introduces the fundamental concept of modified-release solid dosage forms. Emphasis is placed throughout the text on connecting formulation principles with practical pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality assessment. The systematic organization of topics makes complex formulation concepts easier for students to understand. The content is designed to strengthen both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of conventional solid dosage forms. It can serve as a useful academic resource for undergraduate pharmacy students, teachers, researchers, and professionals seeking foundational knowledge of pharmaceutical formulation. Overall, the book provides a strong platform for understanding dosage-form science and prepares students for advanced study in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical technology, formulation development, and industrial pharmacy
