About Book
The Text Book of General Pharmacology has been designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and clinical applications of pharmacology. The book begins with the definition, scope, sources, and nomenclature of drugs. It explains the various routes of drug administration and their significance in achieving desired therapeutic effects. Fundamental concepts of pharmacokinetics, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs, are presented in a systematic manner. Factors affecting drug action are discussed to help readers understand individual variations in therapeutic response. The concepts of drug receptors and mechanisms of drug action are explained with emphasis on their pharmacological importance. The book further introduces the general principles of pharmacodynamics, including dose-response relationships. Important concepts related to agonists, antagonists, and therapeutic index are described clearly. Adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, drug toxicity, pharmacovigilance, and medication safety are also comprehensively discussed. A dedicated section on the autonomic nervous system explains its organization and physiological functions. Cholinergic and adrenergic neurotransmission are presented along with their major pharmacological agents. Parasympathomimetic, parasympatholytic, sympathomimetic, and sympatholytic drugs are discussed with their mechanisms and uses. Neuromuscular blocking agents are also included for a complete understanding of autonomic pharmacology. The central nervous system section covers general anesthetics, sedatives, hypnotics, antipsychotics, antidepressants, and antiepileptic drugs. Opioid analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are described with their therapeutic applications and adverse effects. Cardiovascular pharmacology includes drugs used in hypertension, angina, arrhythmias, and heart failure. Anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, and hypolipidemic agents are also presented in a clinically relevant manner. Endocrine pharmacology discusses insulin, oral antidiabetic agents, thyroid drugs, corticosteroids, sex hormones, and contraceptives. The chemotherapy section introduces major antibiotics and their rational therapeutic applications. Antifungal, antiviral, antimalarial, and antitubercular drugs are discussed systematically. Important principles and therapeutic approaches related to anticancer drugs are also incorporated. The book further highlights emerging areas such as pharmacogenomics and their importance in individualized drug therapy. Modern concepts related to biologics and biosimilars are included to reflect recent advances in pharmacological treatment. Personalized medicine is discussed as an evolving approach for improving therapeutic effectiveness and patient safety. Applications of artificial intelligence in drug therapy and pharmacology introduce readers to the growing role of digital technologies in healthcare. Overall, the book emphasizes the rational use of medicines and provides students, teachers, researchers, and healthcare professionals with a strong foundation for understanding safe, effective, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy.
