About Book

The Textbook of Biochemistry is a comprehensive guide that explores the molecular basis of life, focusing on the structure, function, and metabolism of biomolecules. It begins with an introduction to biomolecules, discussing their classification and the chemical nature and biological roles of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, amino acids, and proteins. The chapter explains how these organic compounds serve as the building blocks of life, participating in structural formation, energy production, and genetic processes. The section on bioenergetics introduces the concept of free energy, distinguishing between endergonic and exergonic reactions, and explains the relationship among free energy, enthalpy, and entropy. It highlights redox potential and energy-rich compounds such as ATP and cyclic AMP, emphasizing their biological significance in energy transfer and cellular regulation. The carbohydrate metabolism chapter covers glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the HMP shunt in detail, describing their pathways, energetics, and physiological importance. It also discusses glycogen metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and the hormonal regulation of blood glucose, with clinical insight into diabetes mellitus and glycogen storage diseases. The next section, biological oxidation, explains the mechanisms of the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation, along with substrate-level phosphorylation, inhibitors, and uncouplers that affect energy production. The lipid metabolism chapter elaborates on β-oxidation of fatty acids, ketone body formation, fatty acid synthesis, and cholesterol metabolism, including its conversion to bile acids, steroid hormones, and vitamin D, while addressing disorders like atherosclerosis and fatty liver. The section on amino acid metabolism discusses reactions such as transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation, along with the urea cycle and its disorders. It also includes the catabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine and their related diseases like phenylketonuria and albinism. Furthermore, it explains the biosynthesis and physiological roles of dopamine, serotonin (5-HT), melatonin, noradrenaline, and adrenaline, along with heme catabolism and jaundice. The nucleic acid metabolism chapter focuses on purine and pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis and degradation, hyperuricemia, and gout, while also detailing the structure and function of DNA and RNA. It further explores DNA replication, transcription, the genetic code, and translation, including inhibitors of protein synthesis. The final section on enzymes describes their properties, nomenclature, and IUB classification, and explains enzyme kinetics using Michaelis and Lineweaver-Burk plots. It also covers enzyme inhibition, regulation through induction and allosteric control, and their therapeutic and diagnostic applications, including isoenzymes. Lastly, the role of coenzymes is detailed, explaining their structures and biochemical functions in catalysis. Overall, this textbook provides a deep and systematic understanding of biochemistry, integrating molecular concepts with physiological and clinical relevance for students and professionals in the life sciences.
