About Book
The Text Book of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry-II is an essential resource for understanding the biochemical and chemical foundations of natural products derived from plants. It begins with an introduction to metabolic pathways in higher plants, describing the intricate processes that govern the formation of various secondary metabolites. The book highlights major biosynthetic routes such as the shikimic acid, acetate, and amino acid pathways, explaining their roles in producing important phytoconstituents. It also discusses the utilization of radioactive isotopes for biogenetic investigations, helping students grasp experimental techniques used to trace metabolic processes. A comprehensive section on secondary metabolites covers the chemistry, sources, and pharmacological significance of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, steroids, terpenoids, glycosides, resins, volatile oils, and tannins. Examples include drugs like Vinca, Rauwolfia, Belladonna, Opium, Liquorice, Digitalis, Mentha, Clove, and Cinnamon, emphasizing their therapeutic and commercial importance. The text further explains the isolation, identification, and analysis of key phytoconstituents such as menthol, citral, artemisinin, atropine, quinine, and curcumin, integrating both traditional and modern approaches. Industrial production and estimation of high-value compounds like forskolin, sennosides, diosgenin, digoxin, and taxol are detailed, linking theory with practical applications in pharmaceutical industries. The book also elaborates on the use of advanced analytical techniques including spectroscopy, chromatography, and electrophoresis for the purification and structural elucidation of natural products. Modern extraction methods and their efficiency in isolating pure compounds are discussed, reflecting recent innovations in phytochemical research. Through its organized presentation, clear explanations, and emphasis on bioactive plant constituents, this textbook bridges the gap between pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, and industrial pharmacology. It serves as a foundation for students, researchers, and professionals seeking to understand natural drug development and plant-based therapeutics.
