About Book
Text Book of Medicinal Chemistry – III is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge of chemotherapeutic agents with emphasis on their historical development, nomenclature, stereochemistry, structure–activity relationship (SAR), chemical degradation, classification, and important therapeutic products. The book begins with antibiotics, covering β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, β-lactamase inhibitors, and monobactams, along with aminoglycosides and tetracyclines. It further discusses macrolides, miscellaneous antibiotics like chloramphenicol and clindamycin, and introduces the fundamental concepts of prodrug design. Detailed coverage of antimalarial drugs includes quinoline derivatives, biguanides, dihydrotriazines, and artemisinin compounds with emphasis on their SAR and mechanism of action. Anti-tubercular agents are explained under synthetic and antibiotic classes, along with urinary tract anti-infectives and quinolone derivatives. The section on antiviral agents highlights drugs used against influenza, herpes, and HIV infections, focusing on nucleoside analogues and protease inhibitors. Antifungal agents, both antibiotic and synthetic, are described with their structural features and pharmacological importance. The text also includes anti-protozoal agents and anthelmintics used in parasitic infections, detailing their chemistry and therapeutic applications. Sulphonamides and sulfones are discussed with their historical background, classification, and folate reductase inhibition mechanism. The final chapters introduce modern concepts of drug design, including QSAR parameters such as partition coefficient, Hammett and Taft constants, and Hansch analysis. Pharmacophore modeling, molecular docking, and combinatorial chemistry approaches are also explained, providing students with insight into contemporary drug discovery techniques. Overall, the book integrates classical medicinal chemistry with modern computational and synthetic strategies, making it highly relevant for advanced pharmacy education.
