The section on prescriptions explains their structure, different parts, handling procedures, and commonly used Latin terminology. Pharmaceutical calculations are discussed with practical examples covering the metric system, alligation, proof spirit, isotonic solutions, percentage strength, ratio strength, and geometric dilution. The book also introduces scientific notation and commonly used pharmaceutical units and measures. Posology is presented with emphasis on dose calculation based on age, body weight, and body surface area. Fundamental concepts of dosage forms and routes of drug administration are clearly explained. The role of active pharmaceutical ingredients and pharmaceutical excipients in formulation development is discussed along with their ideal characteristics and importance. Separate chapters are devoted to powders, tablets, and capsules with their definitions, classifications, advantages, disadvantages, and basic methods of preparation. Official preparations of powders, including dusting, effervescent, efflorescent, hygroscopic powders, and eutectic mixtures, are described in detail. The chapter on tablets includes different types of tablets, moulded tablets, pills, and introductory manufacturing methods. Capsules are discussed with reference to their types, sizes, advantages, disadvantages, and preparation techniques. The book provides extensive coverage of monophasic liquid dosage forms intended for both internal and external use. Preparations such as aromatic waters, syrups, elixirs, linctuses, liniments, lotions, throat paints, gargles, and mouthwashes are explained with suitable examples. Other pharmaceutical preparations such as enemas, eye drops, ear drops, nasal drops, and tinctures are also covered systematically. The section on suspensions explains flocculated and deflocculated systems, formulation excipients, advantages, disadvantages, and general preparation methods. Emulsions are discussed with emphasis on their types, emulsifying agents, identification tests, and general methods of preparation. Semisolid dosage forms, including ointments, pastes, creams, and gels, are presented with their classification, bases, excipients, advantages, disadvantages, and manufacturing methods. The book also provides a detailed introduction to suppositories and pessaries, including their types, formulation components, ideal base properties, displacement value, and preparation techniques. Each topic is organized in a student-friendly manner to develop a clear understanding of basic pharmaceutical concepts and dosage-form technology. Overall, the Text Book of General Pharmacy serves as a valuable foundation for pharmacy students and supports the development of essential knowledge and practical understanding required for higher studies and professional pharmacy practice.
