About Book
Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry–I is a well-structured and comprehensive textbook designed in accordance with the latest Pharmacy Council of India (BP 202T) syllabus, specifically catering to undergraduate pharmacy students. The book provides a strong foundation in organic chemistry with a clear focus on its pharmaceutical applications. It begins with the basic principles, including classification, structure, and properties of organic compounds, and gradually advances to essential topics such as hydrocarbons, functional groups, isomerism, hybridization, reaction mechanisms, and stereochemistry.
The text presents an in-depth study of important classes of organic compounds, including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, haloalkanes, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and their derivatives. Emphasis is placed on both IUPAC and common nomenclature, along with detailed discussions on reactions, mechanisms, and structure–property relationships.
Fundamental reaction mechanisms such as free radical substitution, nucleophilic substitution (SN1 and SN2), elimination reactions (E1 and E2), addition reactions, rearrangements, and pericyclic reactions are explained in a clear, stepwise, and student-friendly manner. Important concepts including carbocation stability, free radical intermediates, Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov rules, Saytzeff’s rule, tautomerism, and conjugation are elaborated to enhance conceptual clarity.
To facilitate effective learning, the book incorporates qualitative tests, comparative tables, solved examples, and practical illustrations. Overall, it effectively connects core organic chemistry principles with pharmaceutical applications, ensuring academic depth, clarity of concepts, and thorough preparation for advanced studies and professional practice in pharmacy.
