About Book

Environmental protection and sustainable development have become essential priorities in the modern world. Rapid industrialization, urbanization, population growth, and the excessive use of natural resources have contributed to environmental problems such as air and water pollution, waste accumulation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Understanding these challenges and adopting environmentally responsible practices are essential for protecting human health and maintaining ecological balance. This book, Environmental Sciences, has been prepared in accordance with the revised Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) syllabus for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) programme, as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It is designed primarily for students studying Environmental Sciences (BP302T), Semester III, and aims to provide a clear, systematic, and application-oriented understanding of environmental science in relation to pharmaceutical education and practice. The book covers the major topics prescribed in the revised syllabus, including environmental pollution, pharmaceutical waste and effluent management, the environmental impact of the pharmaceutical industry, sustainability in the pharmaceutical sector, and government policies and regulatory compliance. It discusses the causes, effects, and control measures of different types of pollution; the management of pharmaceutical and biomedical waste; the design and functioning of effluent treatment plants; and water purification methods used in pharmaceutical settings. Special emphasis has been placed on the environmental risks associated with active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), pharmaceutical residues, and manufacturing activities. The book also explains the principles and practices of green pharmacy, sustainable development, energy conservation, resource optimization, and the role of pharmacists in protecting the environment. Important environmental legislation, regulatory bodies, government initiatives, and the ISO 14000 family of environmental management standards are also discussed. In keeping with the educational vision of NEP 2020, the content has been organized to support conceptual understanding, practical awareness, critical thinking, and the application of knowledge to real-world pharmaceutical situations. Simple explanations, relevant examples, comparative tables, flow diagrams, and important examination questions have been included to make learning easier and more effective for students. The book is intended to serve as a useful academic resource for B.Pharm students and a reference for teachers and other readers interested in environmental protection and sustainable pharmaceutical practices. It also seeks to encourage students to understand their professional responsibilities in preventing pharmaceutical pollution, conserving natural resources, promoting safe medicine disposal, and supporting environmentally responsible healthcare. Environmental conservation is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of individuals, educational institutions, industries, healthcare professionals, and government authorities. As future pharmacists, students have an important role in promoting environmental awareness and contributing to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future. It is sincerely hoped that this book will help students achieve the learning objectives of the revised PCI syllabus as per NEP 2020 and inspire them to integrate environmental responsibility into their academic, professional, and personal lives.
