About Book
Thermal Engineering forms the backbone of mechanical and power engineering disciplines and plays a vital role in the operation and maintenance of modern industrial systems. A diploma holder in mechanical and allied engineering fields is frequently entrusted with the supervision, operation, and upkeep of steam generators, turbines, compressors, internal combustion engines, and other power plant equipment. To perform these responsibilities effectively, a clear understanding of fundamental thermodynamic principles and thermal systems is essential. This book has been carefully designed to meet the curriculum requirements of diploma-level students. It presents the basic concepts of thermodynamics and their practical applications in a simple, systematic, and student-friendly manner. The text begins with fundamental concepts and perfect gas laws, which build the foundation necessary for understanding thermodynamic processes and the laws of thermodynamics. Subsequent chapters cover properties of steam, steam generators, air standard cycles, air compressors, heat transfer, internal combustion engines, steam turbines, gas turbines, and jet propulsion.
About Author
Mr. Atul Ranjan is a mechanical engineer by training and a public servant by choice, whose professional journey bridges industry, governance, and vocational education. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Birsa Institute of Technology, Sindri (2004–2008), where his academic interests in Thermal Engineering, Mechanics of Solids, and Fluid Mechanics shaped his analytical approach to problem-solving. He began his career in the corporate sector with Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Limited (formerly JUSCO Ltd.), joining as a Graduate Trainee in July 2008. Following a year of structured training, he worked as Manager in the Water Services Department, gaining firsthand experience in infrastructure execution and public utility management. Drawn toward public service, he joined the Bihar Industrial Training Service in May 2011. Since then, he has served in diverse roles across the state—as Principal of Government ITIs at Darbhanga, Ghoghardiha, and Gaya, and at the state headquarters as Assistant Director (Training) and Controller of Examinations. He also served as Mission Director, Bihar Skill Development Mission (BSDM), engaging closely with training systems, examinations, and institutional reform. Currently serving as Deputy Director (Training), Atul Ranjan continues to work at the intersection of skills, institutions, and people. His experiences inform his writing, rooted in the realities of education, administration, and the quiet discipline of public service.
