About Book
Photonics and optics have emerged as key fields in nano-scale device development, particularly in creating compact and efficient optical sensors for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). These sensors are highly valued for their low power consumption, compactness, precision, and rapid response, making them suitable for applications in industrial automation, environmental monitoring, defense, and medical diagnostics. However, miniaturization often increases optical losses, reducing sensor efficiency. To address this, photonic crystals (PhCs) are utilized to enhance light confinement and minimize losses. This study presents a comprehensive framework for designing high-performance PhC-based optical sensors using OptiFDTD (based on the Finite Difference Time Domain method) and Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) techniques. A detailed analysis of light propagation in 2D PhC waveguides and cavities is carried out. Various sensors—biosensors, pressure, temperature, and magnetic field sensors—are designed to achieve maximum sensitivity and Q-factor, demonstrating the robustness and versatility of the proposed architecture.
