About Book
Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry I provides a comprehensive foundation in the fundamental principles of organic chemistry essential for understanding pharmaceutical sciences. The book introduces students to the structure, nomenclature, preparation, properties, reactions, and mechanisms of important classes of organic compounds, with particular emphasis on their pharmaceutical relevance.
The book begins with aliphatic saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, covering alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, and conjugated dienes, along with important concepts such as free-radical substitution, electrophilic addition, Markovnikov’s and anti-Markovnikov’s rules, ozonolysis, conformational theories, and the Diels–Alder reaction. It further discusses alkyl halides, emphasizing nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions, their mechanisms, kinetics, stereochemistry, and factors influencing reaction pathways.
The subsequent chapters focus on benzene and its derivatives, introducing aromaticity, resonance, molecular orbital concepts, Hückel’s rule, electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions, and the influence of substituents on reactivity and orientation. The final section deals with carbonyl compounds, particularly aldehydes and ketones, including their preparation, properties, nucleophilic addition, condensation reactions, oxidation and reduction reactions.
Throughout the book, theoretical concepts are connected with pharmaceutical applications through examples such as liquid paraffin, soft paraffin, hard paraffin, chloral, paraldehyde, and ketoprofen. Mechanistic explanations and representative reactions are presented to develop students’ conceptual understanding and ability to predict organic transformations.
The book is designed to serve as a fundamental learning resource for B.Pharm students, helping them develop the chemical knowledge required for subsequent courses in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacology, and drug design. It also provides a strong foundation for understanding the relationship between chemical structure, reactivity, and pharmaceutical activity.
